The first tanners
More often than not, it is by chance new manufacturing processess are being discovered.
According to the legend, this is what happenned for the tanning process. In many of the Hittites texts, it was around 2200 B.C that a Sinai shepherd, after having killed a goat, skinned it, degreased it with clay and salted it, had the skin taken away by a whirlwind. It fell in the cavity of a rock . It was full of water which had partly dissolved alum salts. The presence of salt on the skin helped the action of the alum. A month later, the shepherd passed in front of the rock with his flock where the skin had landed. He saw it and picked it up, hung it to dry and then wore it. Contrary to what usually happened the skin did not whiten or rot under the sun light….
