Origin of the word venerable:
Anderson’s constitution fixed two apprentice grades, the companion names the Master or the Master of the Lodge as the master of the Venerable Lodge. He was distinguished and was given the three grades as well as the one of Master of the Lodge or venerable. According to Marcy, this term would have been introduced in France by the Duc de Clermont. In 1773, The royal order of the Freemasons fixed their status « The great East of France will only admit the venerable of the lodge to be the master chosen by the members of the lodge..."
