Some men at arms directly joined forces with one of the religious group of the Old World, bringing together a military order with a specific religion. As such, they took the name of the Knights Templar or Templars. These knights can be at the service of God for a set period of time or more rarely for life. Sometimes a knight can become a Templar as an act of penitence, to atone for a perjury or for a violation of a commandment. All military orders demand an absolute submission and a high level of training. The Templars are under the orders of the temple authority and live within its walls. Their duty is to protect the temple and the dignitaries, and to take military action necessary to the destruction of heresies, the organization of holy wars and the support of faith against persecution and attacks of infidels.
